According to Gallup, a majority of Americans are optimistic President Obama can bring troops home from Afghanistan in a way that does not harm the U.S., improve conditions for minorities and the poor, and improve education. However, they do not have a lot of confidence that the recently re-elected president can substantially reduce the deficit, avoid raising taxes and heal political division in the U.S. Americans are now generally less optimistic in what the president can accomplish than in November 2008.
