So, just how much did that record $6 billion spent on election campaigning help the economy? If anything, the effect was negligible considering the overall size of the U.S. economy or even the size of the economy in one of the key battleground states, Ohio. All those dollars funneled into the campaign and PACs may have even had a negative effect because it was money not spent on more productive economic activity.
