The stock market has taken some beatings but none like Hurricane Sandy delivered. U.S. exchanges resumed trading after a two-day suspension to safeguard workers as the storm made its way up the eastern seaboard. The NYSE is running on backup power until electricity is fully restored, but there was no damage to the trading floor reported. The last time a weather-related event shut down the American equity markets for two days was March 12 and 13, 1888, when a blizzard dumped 21 inches of snow on New York.
