Not that long ago, parents purchased polio insurance for newborns. Public swimming pools often closed because of the disease. And movie goers were urged to keep their distance from each other, in order to avoid contagion. It’s hard to believe that, 60 years later, the disease is a rarity in all but a couple parts of the world. What caused the change? A couple of vaccines, a lot of money and widespread international commitment.
