Unum Group Corp. (NYSE:UNM) is getting ready for the upcoming benefits open enrollment season by sending employers a benefits primer.

Unum, Chattanooga, Tenn., is encouraging employers to try to increase satisfaction and plan enrollment rates by using what it calls a “3+3″ communication strategy.

Unum traditionally has been best known as a disability insurer, but it has been promoting itself as source of absence management services, voluntary benefits and general benefits advice in recent years.

In the new benefits guide, Unum contends that effective benefits education is a tool employers can use to address the current low levels of employee satisfaction as the economy starts to move toward recovery.

Unum says employers can use the strategy by exposing employees to benefits communications at least 3 weeks before the enrollment through 3 different channels.

Employees who received communications through a 3+3 program “were much more likely to report they had enough time to make informed choices compared to those who had less time to become familiar with their benefits,” the company says.
