AALTCI: Home Care Prices Stay in Solar System

The American Association for Long Term Care Insurance (AALTCI) has good news and bad news about the price of home health care aide services.

The good news is that the average hourly rate is about the same as it was last year.

The bad news is that the average rate was high last year: About $21 per hour. That would amount to about $42,000 per year for an aide who works in the home 40 hours per week and might total more than $160,000 per year for a recipient who needed aides in the home 24 hours per day.

AALTCI, Westlake Village, Calif., has based the figures on data from its 2012-2013 Long Term Care Insurance Sourcebook.

Average hourly home health aide rates in the markets included in the home health rate table range from a low of $12 in Dallas-Fort Worth to a high of $39 in Boston.

About half of LTCI claims start with the recipient getting care at home, according to AALTCI.

“Long-term care insurance has really become nursing home avoidance protection,” AALTCI Executive Director Jesse Slome says in a statement about the home health care rate figures.
