Dennis M. Kelleher is president of Better Markets, a nonprofit that advocates for a strict interpretation of the Dodd-Frank law, which passed in 2010 to rein in the financial industry. “For a long time, there had been no organization dedicated solely to going to toe-to-toe with the financial industry, on any issue, no matter how complex or obscure,” Kelleher said. “That’s what we do.” Many say the odds are against Better Markets. “It’s a battle in which the Wall Street lobbying and public-relations machine will have a decisive advantage,” said Ted Kaufman, former Delaware Senator. “With the regulators, you don’t have to win. You just have to gum them up. And that is exactly what Wall Street has done.”
