A survey by the Consumer Federation of America found that 13% of all employees say they know a lot about disability insurance. Of those that have it, 41% “know for certain” how much they pay, while 47% were sure they knew what their benefit would be if they were injured. Despite their lack of knowledge about the plan, 90% say they want coverage and 86% said they would be willing to contribute half of a $30 monthly premium. Over half (56%) say they would pay the entire premium. Stephen Brobeck, Consumer Federation’s executive director, says employees need to be prepared should a long-term illness befall them, but unless they are informed of the benefits available, they will not take advantage of the programs.
