The percentage of U.S. residents without health coverage differs widely from metropolitan area to metropolitan area, according to Elizabeth Mendes.
Mendes, an analyst at Gallup Inc., Princeton, N.J.. says uninsurance rates range from a high of about 50% in McAllen-Edinburg-Mission in Texas to a low of 4.4% in Boston.
Those two areas might be extreme outliers, but uninsurance rates also vary widely for communities a little further from the top and bottom of the rankings.
Port St. Lucie, Fla., the community 10th up from the bottom, has an uninsurance rate of about 25%. The community 10th down from the top — Rochester, N.Y. — has an uninsurance rate of 7.6%.
