Most folks who read this blog are probably not fans of the Daily Show, the politics of which can only be described as…not Republican. And that’s putting it mildly. However, this show (and its counterpart, the Colbert Report) have entered a weird twilight zone where, by satirizing the news and politics, they have become quasi-legitimate talking heads themselves. I say “quasi” because they really don’t pretend to be on the same level as Fox, CNN or MSNBC. But they do get guests on the show who are more than mere Hollywood stars promoting their latest movie.
Last night, the Daily Show’s interview guest was Kathleen Sebelius, the head of the Department of Health and Human Services and the avatar for health care reform implementation. She takes a lot of heat for her role in making PPACA an on-the-ground reality (she got a dishonorable mention on our Rogue’s Gallery list for those efforts, too). but for those who agree with health care reform, Sebelius is a welcome figure of change.
The reasons are legion for why people in the health insurance industry have a problem with Sebelius, but as PPACA’s implementation continues, and as the fate of all of the finer details of healthcare reform remain unresolved, then there is still an open conversation to be had over where the rest of PPACA is heading. It is a conversation those opposed to PPACA very much need to be a part of, since simply hoping that the Supreme Court will overturn the whole thing (which it is by no means certain that they will) is the kind of Hail Mary strategy that leaves no room for a Plan B.
