New Hire Roundup: Murphy New FSC President/CEO; MSRB Taps New Officers, Board

This week in new hires, FSC named Jerry Murphy its new president and CEO, while the MSRB announced new officers and members of its board. Mercer picked Tom Murphy to head its U.S. region investment management business, and PFM appointed Jim Link and Ken Schiebel to newly created positions.

Also, Randy Faulkner joined Firstrust Financial Resources, Nolan Lehmann joined Kanaly Trust’s board, RIAA announced the winners of its academic thought leadership award and the FPA named Lewis Walker to receive its P. Kemp Fain Jr. Award.

FSC Names Jerry Murphy New President and CEO

Atlanta-based FSC Securities Corp., one of Advisor Group’s three independent broker-dealers, said it named Jerry Murphy as its new president and CEO on Monday. Murphy formerly served as executive vice president of Advisor Group and reports to AIG President and CEO Larry Roth.

“We are delighted that Jerry has accepted the role as president and CEO of FSC Securities Corp,” said Roth in a statement. “Jerry’s demonstrated leadership capabilities, first-hand knowledge of FSC’s culture, home office team and advisors, as well as his extensive experience in the financial services industry make him the ideal leader for FSC.”

MSRB Announces Selection of Officers and New Board Members

The Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board (MSRB) announced Aug. 18 the new officers and board of director members to begin terms Oct. 1. Alan D. Polsky, senior vice president at Dougherty & Co. LLC, will serve as chair, and Robert A. Lamb, president of Lamont Financial Services Corp., as vice chair.

Officer terms are for one year.

Board members will serve a three-year term representing the municipal securities dealer community and the public. New public representatives are Dall Forsythe, vice president of finance and operations at Atlantic Philanthropies, and Peter J. Taylor, EVP and CFO of the University of California system.

Joining as bank representatives are Joseph J. Geraci, managing director and co-head of capital markets for the municipal securities division at Citi, and Daniel Heimowitz, managing director at RBC Capital Markets’ U.S. municipal finance group. The board’s new securities firm representative is Edward J. De La Rosa, president of De La Rosa & Co.

Mercer Names Tom Murphy Head of Investment Management for U.S. Region

Mercer announced Aug. 18 that it has named Senior Partner Tom Murphy as head of its investment management business for the U.S. region, effective Sept. 1. He will report to Rich Nuzum, president and global business leader of Mercer’s investment management business.

Murphy will remain a member of Mercer’s global investment management leadership team, and will be based in Boston.

Prior to this role, he served as Mercer’s head of investment management for the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. Murphy has been with Mercer since 1997, holding positions of increasing responsibility, including business leader of investment consulting in Ireland.

With Murphy’s appointment, Ken Crotty, who since 2008 has served as both head of investment management in the U.S. and global COO for the investment businesses, will now focus exclusively on his COO responsibilities.

PFM Announces Link, Schiebel Appointments

PFM Asset Management LLC (PFMAM), part of The PFM Group of companies, announced Tuesday the appointment of Managing Director Jim Link, CEBS, to the newly created position of chief marketing officer, and Managing Director Ken Schiebel, CFA, as head of a newly formed portfolio strategies group.

As chief marketing officer, Link will work closely with all regional managing directors. Prior to this position, he led product development, product sales, benefits and investment consulting, and client servicing efforts in advising clients with more than $1.3 billion in OPEB assets.

Previously, he served as national sales manager for Wachovia’s institutional retirement services and institutional trust functions; before that, he had a similar role with Manning & Napier Advisors. He also spent time at T. Rowe Price, Prudential and VALIC, a retirement services firm.

Schiebel has over 27 years experience in portfolio management, investment analysis, asset/liability matching and developing innovative investment strategies for clients. Prior to joining PFM in 1994, he spent 13 years at Aetna Life & Casualty.

Firstrust Financial Resources Adds NY Life’s Faulkner to Team

Firstrust Financial Resources, LLC (FFR), a Philadelphia-based wealth management firm and wholly owned subsidiary of Firstrust Bank, announced August 18 that it had welcomed Randy Faulkner to the firm. He will be responsible for cultivating new business relationships from external sources as well as providing service to existing bank clients in the Newtown and Doylestown branches.

Faulkner brings with him 25 years of collective experience in various niches of the financial services business, including insurance, wealth advisory and mortgage related businesses, financial analysis, accounting and business development.

Kanaly Trust Announces Addition of Nolan Lehmann to Board of Directors

Kanaly Trust, a provider of wealth management and trust and estate services to families, individuals and estates since 1975, announced on August 15 that it has added Nolan Lehmann to its board of directors.

Lehmann is a CPA with over 30 years of financial services, investment management and merger and acquisition experience. He is currently a director of Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE:RSG); his previous experience includes board service with five other NYSE and five NASDAQ companies. He has also achieved the CIMA (Certified Investment Management Analyst) and RIA (Registered Investment Advisor) designations.

Retirement Income Industry Association Announces Winners of Academic Thought Leadership Awards

The Retirement Income Industry Association (RIIA) recently announced the winners of its first Academic Thought Leadership Award. Duncan Williams, CFP, doctoral candidate and graduate instructor in the personal financial planning division of Texas Tech University, and his advisor, Michael S. Finke, Ph.D., associate professor and coordinator of the personal financial planning division, will receive the award along with the $5,000 prize at RIIA’s Fall Conference & Awards Gala in Boston, MA, on October 3. Bruce E. Wolfe, CFA, managing director of Allianz Global Investors, which is the founding sponsor of the Thought Leadership Award program, will present the honor.

In addition, Williams’ and Finke’s award-winning paper, “Determining Optimal Withdrawal Rates: An Economic Approach,” will be featured in the fall issue of the Retirement Management Journal (RMJ). Also sponsored by Allianz Global Investors, the RMJ is the first peer-reviewed publication serving financial advisors, practitioners, executives, and scholars who are interested in all topics relating to retirement-income planning and management.

The article by Williams and Finke documents a different approach to optimal withdrawal rates from retirement accounts. The authors consider not only the risk of running out of assets in retirement, but also the loss that occurs when retirees spend too little money and die with larger bequests than they intended.

FPA Honors Lewis Walker with 2011 P. Kemp Fain Jr. Award

The Financial Planning Association (FPA) announced on August 19 that certified financial planner Lewis Walker is its 2011 P. Kemp Fain Jr. Award honoree for his commitment to the development of the financial planning profession throughout his more than 30 years as a financial planner. The award recognizes an FPA member who has made outstanding contributions to the financial planning profession in the areas of service to society, academia, government and professional activities, and upholds FPA’s core values: competence, integrity, relationships and stewardship.

Walker has been in individual practice as a financial planner and registered investment adviser, and has run his own independent financial planning and investment management practice since 1976. He is currently president of Walker Capital Management Corporation and Life Transitions Advisors, LLC, in Norcross, GA.

He will be recognized for his award at FPA Experience 2011, the annual conference of the financial planning community, to be held Sept.15–18 in San Diego.
