Deanna Mulligan will take over as chief executive officer (CEO) of Guardian Life Insurance Company of America July 1, the company says.

Guardian, New York, promoted Mulligan to president and chief operating officer in October 2010 and announced at that time that it planned to make Mulligan CEO in mid-2011.

Mulligan will succeed Dennis Manning.

Manning will continue to be the executive chairman until Feb. 1, 2012, and then retire, the company says.

Mulligan began working in the individual life and disability business at Guardian in July 2008. Before that, she worked for New York Life Insurance Company, New York, and AXA Financial, New York. She also was a principal in the New York office of McKinsey & Company.

Mulligan has a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Nebraska and a master’s degree in business from Stanford University.
