A dental insurer is trying to help employers adapt to the fact that the cost of dental care often exceeds annual benefits limits.

Ameritas Group, a unit of UNIFI Mutual Holding Company, Lincoln, Neb., says it is now offering a $5,000 annual maximum option on some dental plans.

Typical U.S. dental plans have been offered annual maximums of $1,000 to $1,500, but the full retail cost of a root canal may cost $1,000 per molar, and a single dental implant may cost about $2,200, according to the American Dental Association, Chicago.
