Montana legislatures are debating a health insurance exchange bill and an anti-exchange bill.

Montana state Rep. Chuck Hunter, D-Helena, Mont., has introduced H.B. 124, a bill that would help Montana implement the health insurance exchange provisions of the Affordable Care Act, the federal legislative package that includes the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

State health insurance exchanges are supposed to start helping consumers and small employers buy subsidized health coverage from private carriers starting in 2014.

State Sen. Jason Priest, R-Red Lodge, Mont., has introduced S.B. 228, a bill that would forbid Montana from setting up a health insurance exchange.
