Washington State Now a Producer State

Washington state is updating its administrative code to change the terms insurance “agent,” insurance “broker” and insurance “solicitor” to “insurance producer.”

The state is shifting to the term insurance producer to comply with a statute enacted in 2008.

In a description of the powers of the Washington state insurance commissioner, for example, the state now says the commissioner has the authority to revoke or suspend the licenses of insurance producers, rather than insurance agents, brokers and solicitors.

The state still refers separately to title insurance agents, surplus lines brokers, adjusters, insurance education providers, reinsurance intermediaries, and viatical and life settlement brokers.
