Northwestern Mutual Assesses LTC Costs

The average annual cost of a private room in a U.S., Medicare-certified skilled nursing facility is $90,155, according to Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company.

Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, Milwaukee, hired Long Term Care Group Inc., Eden Prairie, Minn., to survey about 6,000 nursing homes, assisted living facilities and home health care agencies in 127 market areas for it between April and May.

Average nursing home costs ranged from $127 per day in Louisiana to $538 per day in Alaska.

Monthly assisted living costs ranged from $1,901 in North Dakota to about $4,000 in the District of Columbia and 6 eastern states.

For home health aides provided by a certified home health care agency, the average hourly rate ranged from $14.50 in Shreveport, La., to $34.85 in Stamford, Conn.
