Contracts: Highmark, MassMutual

Highmark Medicare Services Inc. has picked Companion Data Services L.L.C. to provide information technology and support for a national health care reimbursement system.

Highmark Medicare, a unit of Highmark Inc., Pittsburgh, has awarded Companion, an arm of South Carolina Blue, Columbia, S.C., a 5-year contract to run the system, which will help the government reimburse hospitals that provide emergency care for undocumented aliens.

The reimbursement program was authorized by the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003, Companion says.
