Despite deep concern for the future of their adult children with disabilities, a study of parents of such children find most have done little to prepare for the day their children will be on their own.

The research by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, Springfield, Mass., and Easter Seals, Chicago, found of parents of adult children with a disability, 70% have not designated a guardian, 74% have not developed an estate plan and 94% have no life care plan.

The study also found 49% of parents of adult children with a disability say the cost of caring for their children has hurt their ability to save for retirement, and 28% said it had impaired their ability to pay for the education of their other children.
