A new survey of older voters finds they are virtually unanimous in support of upholding Social Security’s promise of lifetime benefits.

In a survey of its members, AARP, Washington, found 95% said it’s important that a candidate pledge to protect Social Security as a guaranteed, life-long benefit, with similar support among Republicans (94%), Democrats (98%) and ticket-splitters (95%).

Among members surveyed, 97% also said Social Security is important for future generations.

AARP also found 67% agree with a candidate who says that Social Security is essential for seniors and 60% said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who supports cutting Social Security benefits to reduce the deficit, including 66% of Democrats, 51% of Republicans and 61% of ticket-splitters.
