Express Scripts Inc. says it now can identify health plan members who need extra help with taking prescribed medications.

Express Scripts, St. Louis (Nasdaq:ESRX), a large pharmacy benefits manager (PBM), says it has used its own records to come up a model that can predict up to a year in advance whether a patient who has diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol will have trouble sticking to the recommended regimen.

Express Scripts can then use reminders, consultations with pharmacists, lowered copayments, home delivery of medications, auto refills, renewal assistance and educational information to help improve adherence to physicians’ instructions, the company says.
