You can use outside investors to help finance your growth plans. Firms such as Asset Management Finance (AMF) and Fiduciary Network LLC, for example, have created programs directed at the advisory community wherein they take a stake in the enterprise rather than ownership control. They are passive investors, to the extent that the business remains well managed. They extract a preferred return from the owners of the advisory business. AMF tends to structure their investments with a defined life almost like a convertible security; Fiduciary Network tends to have a permanent interest in the business and creates incentives for the advisors to grow at a certain rate.
