About 40% of U.S. workers who have employer-sponsored health coverage admit that they are not quite sure how their coverage is supposed to work.

UnitedHealthcare, a unit of UnitedHealth Group Inc., Minnetonka, Minn. (NYSE:UNH), has published that figure in a summary of results from a survey of 953 U.S. adults ages 18 and older who live in private households in the continental United States and have employer-sponsored coverage through their own employers or through family members’ employers.

Older survey participants were more likely than younger participants to say they believe they understand their health benefits: 48% of the participants ages 18 to 34 said they understand their health benefits only “somewhat,” or do not understand their health benefits at all.

About 65% of the participants said that, as a result of the national debate about health care, they will be paying more attention to their health benefits.

About 31% of the participants said they prefer to learn about health benefits through brochures and other print materials, and 29% said they prefer to learn about health benefits through the Web.
