In an effort to raise funds for the Northeast Spinal Cord Injury Association and the Zachery Weinstein foundation, Legacy Financial Advisors Inc., Milford, Mass., sponsored the fourth annual Codger Cup at Wedgewood Pines, Stow, Mass.

Zack Weinsten, who grew up in Needham, Mass., is paralyzed from the chest down after a canoeing accident. Despite his injuries, the Skidmore College graduate is pursuing an acting career and has guest-starring roles on Fox’s “Glee” and an upcoming episode CBS’ NCIS.”

Zack’s parents, Adrian and Elliot Weinstein, are longtime friends of Legacy principals Linda and Paul J. Mauro, and inspired the Mauros to promote spinal cord injury awareness.

“Our firm has really been energized by the success of Zack who, despite his injuries, never lost his drive to achieve his dreams,” says Legacy President Paul J. Mauro, CLU, ChFC. “Everyone at Legacy contributes time and money and helps us make a difference to Zack and others who have huge mobility challenges.”

“Supporting individuals with spinal cord injuries and raising awareness has become a big part of our corporate culture and mission,” adds Linda, co-owner of Legacy.

Legacy Financial Advisors specializes in “retirement planning for middle-class millionaires,” the Mauros say. The retiree groups Legacy Financial Advisors serves have also helped raise funds by participating in large numbers at the annual Legacy Codger Cup golfing tournament. The latest Codger Cup event included members of Raytheon Retirees, Inc., The Verizon Pioneers, The GE Old-timers, The Digital Retirees, The Dec-ed Out Group, and recent retirees from EMC Corporation, Hewlett Packard and other corporations based in the Commonwealth.

Legacy Financial Advisors put a special golf cart into service last year for mobility-impaired golfers and invited paraplegic golfer Jerry Donovan, Legacy Financial Advisors’ roving golf ambassador. Donovan often visits rehab centers and Boston-area golf courses to inspire other spinal cord injury sufferers.

“The opportunity to get out again and spend the day on a golf course with friends is a giant uplift for those of us who thought they were out of the game,” Donovan says.
