Increases in Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application rates appear to be moderating.

The Social Security Administration has posted the latest SSDI application statistics on its website.

The annual disability application volume figures show that the number of new applications filed increased to 2.8 million in 2009, up 22% from the 2008 total.

Application rates were significantly higher than in 2008 throughout the year, and application volume hit 733,125 in the third quarter of 2009, up 25% from the total for the third quarter of 2008.

In the first quarter of 2010, SSDI application volume was 5.2% higher than in the first quarter of 2009, and, in the second quarter of 2010, volume was just 2.9% higher.
