The Social Security Administration (SSA) is preparing to conduct a study on efforts to help people with serious disabilities get and keep jobs.
The SSA will be starting a Benefit Offset National Demonstration to test a Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) return-to-work pilot program.
SSDI benefits often take years to get.
Today, Social Security beneficiaries lose SSDI benefits if they complete a trial work period and a 2-month grace period and cross a “substantial gainful activity” earnings threshold.
When the SSA conducts the demonstration project, it will see what happens when it reduces benefits by $1 for every $2 in earnings above the threshold, rather than simply cutting off benefits.
Investigators will try providing the benefit offset by itself and together with work incentives counseling, officials say
