The Standard Charitable Foundation, Standard Insurance Company and Standard employees gave about $2.3 million to nonprofit organizations in 2009.

Standard is a subsidiary of StanCorp Financial Group Inc., Portland, Ore. (NYSE:SFG), and the foundation is an affiliate of Standard.

Standard employees and retirees donated $675,000 through a matching gift program.

One beneficiary, the Forest Park Conservancy, Portland, Ore., will get $150,000 and 1,500 hours of employee volunteer time over the next 3 years, Standard says.

In other insurance philanthropy news, Bankers Life and Casualty Company, Chicago, an arm of CNO Financial Group Inc., Carmel, Ind. (NYSE:CNO), has raised $338,000 for the fight against Alzheimer’s disease, up from $329,000 in 2009.

The company recruited about 1,000 volunteers for its annual “Forget Me Not Days” program.

The volunteers stood on street corners in 130 cities in May and collected donations for the Alzheimer’s Association, Chicago.

The number of cities reached was up from 116 in 2009.

Bankers Life says it supplemented the money the volunteers raised by making an additional $100,000 donation to the association.
