Voluntary critical illness insurance sales were 88% higher in 2009 than in 2008, according to Eastbridge Consulting Group Inc.

Voluntary critical illness insurance has been the fastest-growing employee benefit in the worksite market, Eastbridge says.

Eastbridge has based those voluntary market sales figures on a survey of 60 group and individual worksite marketing carriers.

Overall voluntary benefit product sales increased 3.3% in 2009, to $5.4 billion.

Voluntary market sales increased 67% for long term care insurance, 42% for vision care coverage, 27% for accidental death and dismemberment coverage, and 21% for term life insurance.

At the other end of the spectrum, voluntary dental sales fell 11%.
