Sales of voluntary term life insurance increased 21% in 2009, to $940 million, according to Eastbridge Consulting Group Inc.

Sales of all types of voluntary life coverage amounted to $1.3 billion in 2009, up 14% from the 2008 total, according to Eastbridge, Avon, Conn.

Eastbridge has based those figures on a survey of 60 group and individual worksite marketing carriers.

Sales of voluntary universal and whole life held steady at $371 million.

Voluntary life sales of all kinds accounted for about 24% of U.S. voluntary sales in 2009, Eastbridge says.
