Guardian Life Insurance Company of America is working with Mental Health America to raise awareness of the fact that depression is a common cause of disability.

Guardian, New York, notes that May, which is Disability Insurance Awareness Month, is also Mental Health Month.

The Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education, Arlington, Va., introduced the disability month campaign program in 2007.

The MHA, Alexandria, Va., began the Mental Health Month campaign program in 1949.

Guardian will be promoting both awareness months by sponsoring an online quiz that is designed to dispel myths about mental illness and disability, the company says.

Whenever a visitor completes the quiz this month, Guardian will donate $1 per quiz, up to a total of $10,000, to support MHA mental health education efforts, Guardian says.

The quiz is on the Guardian site, at http://www.guardianlife.com, and on the MHA site, at http://www.mha.org.

In other Disability Insurance Awareness Month news, Assurant Employee Benefits, Kansas City, Mo., a unit of Assurant Inc., New York (NYSE:AIZ), has given the Shining Star of Perseverance award to Chris Waddell.

The award recognizes individuals who have overcome physical disabilities.

Waddell has been paralyzed from the waist down since he hurt himself while skiing in 1988.

Since then, he has become a successful Paralympic skiier. He also has created One Revolution, a nonprofit group that provides handcycles for people with disabilities who live in developing countries.
