The Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education is gearing up to make May a new Disability Insurance Awareness Month.

LIFE, Arlington, Va., says it will be trying to focus more attention on protecting paychecks, rather than on negative thoughts about disabling illnesses and injuries.

“We need to make getting disability insurance as reflexive an act as getting car insurance,” LIFE President Marvin Feldman says. “If you have a car, if you have a job, you need disability insurance. It’s just that simple.”

LIFE will mount a national media campaign that will focus on the story of John Nichols, a Chicago disability insurance broker who began collecting benefits himself after suffering a waterskiing accident.

LIFE also will give consumers a chance to win a $1,000 “bonus paycheck” by participating in a “Where Did My Paycheck Go?” challenge at http://www.protectyourpaycheck.org Challenge participants can watch a video about the concept of insuring a paycheck.

Disability Insurance Awareness Month promotional resources for producers, such as a customizable news release and a marketing guide, are available here.
