Al Ater has been named chief deputy commissioner of insurance for the Louisiana Insurance Department, effective Jan. 11, 2010.

Ater, former Louisiana secretary of state, will manage the department’s day-to-day operations, Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon said.

The appointment will be a return to the insurance department for Ater, who was chief deputy commissioner from July 2004 until March 2005. He then served as first assistant at the Louisiana Department of State before being named secretary of state in July 2005.

The department also announced that Deputy Commissioner Denise Brignac will become the department’s chief of staff. She had been chief deputy commissioner of the department’s Office of Financial Solvency since February 2008.
