Hartford: STD Claims Are Seasonal

U.S. workers are more likely to file accident-related short-term disability claims in the summer, but depression claims jump in January, and respiratory illness claims peak in February.

Analysts in the Simsbury, Conn., offices of Hartford Financial Services Group Inc., Hartford, discuss that seasonality in a report based on a review of 1 million Hartford STD claims filed over the past 5 years.

Although accident-related claims rise in the summer, fracture-related claims also spike in January, Hartford reports.

The lesson is that people in the Northeast and Midwest should be careful when driving during winter storms and use appropriate protective gear when participating in winter sports, Hartford says.
