American Specialty Health Inc. says it is using its lifestyle coaching program as the basis for creating a full personal health coaching program.

The expanded program will provide condition coaching and life skills coaching as well as lifestyle coaching, according to ASH, San Diego.

The lifestyle coaching program, created in 2002, now covers 3.7 million people through contracts with 19 health plans and about 100 employer plans, ASH says.

The personal health coaching program will put more emphasis on strategies for getting patients to change their behavior, ASH says.

Starting July 1, 2010, ASH’s Healthyroads unit will provide condition coaching for patients with diabetes, metabolic syndrome, congestive heart failure, back/spine pain conditions, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, and heart disease.

Healthyroads also will offer life skills coaching services, to help patients with matters such as coping skills, stress prevention and work-life balance.

Healthyroads will continue to provide lifestyle coaching services. Those services help patients with weight management, nutrition, exercise, stress management, tobacco cessation and sleep.
