Patrick Baird, the immediate past chairman of the American Council of Life Insurers, plans to retire from his post as chief executive officer of AEGON Americas Jan. 1, 2010, the company says.

AEGON Americas is a unit of AEGON N.V., The Hague, Netherlands.

Baird will continue to serve on the AEGON executive committee in 2010, the company says.

Mark Mullin, 46, who has been president of AEGON Americas since January, will take over as the CEO of AEGON Americas when Baird retires, AEGON says.

Mullin started out in the insurance industry as an investment analyst a Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, Horsham, Pa., and began working for AEGON in 1987.

He has been head of AEGON’s U.S. pension and retirement services business, and he also has been head of the company’s annuity and mutual fund businesses.

As CEO of AEGON Americas, Mullin will oversee AEGON’s operations in United Canada, Mexico and Brazil as well as in the United States. He also will have responsibility for AEGON’s global life reinsurance activities, AEGON says.

AEGON, the parent of Transamerica, has about 14,500 employees in the Americas and about 30 million policy holders and certificate holders here.
