Survey: Women Place High Value On College

Women appear to be more likely than men to say that it is very important for their kids to get a college degree.

Marketers at OppenheimerFunds Inc., a unit of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, Springfield, Mass., have published that finding in a summary of results from an online survey, conducted in September, of 1,099 women and 559 men with at least one child age 18 or younger not currently in college.

About 74% of the women surveyed said it is very important for their children to get college degrees. Only 66% of the men who participated shared that sentiment.

About 52% of the women surveyed agreed that having a college education is important to helping a woman achieve financial security, while just 30% of men said a college education is important to helping a man achieve financial security, Oppenheimer reports.

Even though mothers give more weight to having a college degree, fathers are more likely to take charge of planning for paying for college.

In households that have started planning for college costs, 56% of the mothers said they know how much their household has saved for college, and 40% of the mothers said they have a goal for college savings.

About 65% of the fathers said they know how much they have saved for college, and 46% said they have a college savings goal in mind.
