About 87% of parents and other people with primary responsibility for taking care of children believe that good dental care is as important for those children as good medical care is.

The Delta Dental Plans Association, Oak Brook, Ill., have published that finding in a summary of results from a survey of 914 U.S. primary caregivers.

The association commissioned the survey as members of the House Oversight Committee domestic policy committee convened to review how the Medicaid health program for the poor is responding to the case of a 12-year child who died because a tooth infection went untreated.

About 79% of the caregivers surveyed called dental benefits extremely important, and 80% said their own children have dental benefits, the association says.

The survey found that 69% of the insured children had visited the dentist, compared with just 54% of the uninsured children.
