Assurant Employee Benefits has developed materials that can help inform employers about tax-advantaged long-term and short-term disability insurance plans.

Assurant Employee Benefits, Kansas City, Mo., part of Assurant Inc., New York, notes that Internal Revenue Service Revenue Ruling 2004-55 permits employees to get disability benefits from a group plan free of federal income taxes in some cases if the premiums are paid with after-tax dollars.

Employers need to think carefully about plan design choices to ensure that the disability benefits are paid on a tax-free basis, the company says.

Assurant Employee Benefits will start distributing the disability kit after Sept. 30.
