N.Y. Life: Protection Plans Shaky

Your article was successfully shared with the contacts you provided.

Many U.S. families have only a vague idea of how they would cope if the breadwinner died.

New York Life Insurance Company, New York, has published data concerning that problem in a summary of results from an online survey of 925 U.S. adults ages 30 and older.

About 83% of the participants said the economic crisis has increased their desire to provide financial protection for their family, and 88% of parents with children under 18 said they want to provide better protection.

But only 32% of the survey participants identified life insurance as the main vehicle for protecting their families’ financial future.

Just 1% said they would think much about depending on winning the lottery, but 22% said they would draw down retirement savings, and 22% said the surviving spouse or other family members would take an additional job. About 7% said they would seek help from friends and relatives.
