The average cost of the individual health coverage that eHealthInsurance.com customers actually buy increased just 1.1% between February 2008 and February 2009.

The cost of the coverage rose to $161 per month, from $159, according to researchers at eHealth Inc., Mountain View, Calif., the company that runs the eHealthInsurance.com website.

The researchers based their figures on an analysis 316,000 major medical policies bought through the site that were active in February 2009, and 258,000 major medical policies bought through the site that were active a year earlier.

For individual policies, the average size of the deductible increased about 12%, to $2,326.

For families, the average monthly premium increased 4%, to $383, and the average deductible increased 13%, to $3,128.

For holders of high-deductible, health savings account-compatible coverage, the average monthly premium increased 4.7% for individuals, to $143, and 7% for families, to $331.
