A foundation with ties to Evolution Benefits Inc. is using a special version of the Benny card system to help the schools in its community.

The Robert & Margaret Patricelli Family Foundation, Hartford, is putting cash into accounts tied to the debit card account program developed by Evolution Benefits, Avon, Conn.

Teachers chosen to get Evolution Benefits TeacherDollars cards can use the cards to buy school supplies. The cards work only at selected merchants that sell classroom-related products.

Program managers are giving to teachers at 13 Hartford schools this year, up from 10 in 2008.

The Patricelli Family Foundation is asking other donors to chip in.

Two of the organizations contributing to the program are the local arm of WellPoint Inc., Indianapolis, and Women’s Health USA Inc., Avon, Conn.
