Despite the recession, an insurer-organized team has raised $229,000 in contributions for the fight against Alzheimer’s disease, up from $203,000 in 2008.

Bankers Life and Casualty Company, Chicago, an arm of Conseco Inc., Carmel, Ind., recruited about 1,000 volunteers for its annual “Forget Me Not Days” program.

The volunteers stood on street corners in 116 cities in May and collected donations for the Alzheimer’s Association, Chicago.

The number of cities reached was up from 104 in 2008.

Bankers Life says it supplemented the money the volunteers raised by making an additional $100,000 donation to the association, increasing the size of the total donation to $329,000.
