Robert MacDonald, a well-known insurance marketing executive, has written about the health care debate in his latest blog entry.

MacDonald, who retired from the post of chairman of Allianz Life of North America, Golden Valley, Minn., a unit of Allianz S.E., Munich, Germany, in 2003, and then ran an Allianz Life retirement income unit from 2006 to 2007, says the current debate is not about health “reform.”

” ‘Reform’ is what you do to change an existing system,” MacDonald writes. “ When there are over 46 million Americans who do not have any type of healthcare coverage, you do not have an existing system of national health care. There is nothing to reform, because there is no system.”

MacDonald argues that the debate should not be about “reform,” but about “rights.”

“Opponents would have been put on the defensive and forced to debate the crucial question of: Do all Americans have the right to receive healthcare?” MacDonald writes. “What politician (bureaucrat) would stand up and proclaim that only ‘certain’ Americans have a right to healthcare?”
