Petersen International Underwriters Inc. observed the 2009 Disability Insurance Awareness Month by offering disability insurance production awards.

Petersen International, Valencia, Calif., a company that helps set up specialized types of life and health coverage, offered memberships in the International DI Society, Seal Beach, Calif., and registrations for the IDIS 2009 annual conference to professionals who met disability insurance production goals.

The contest helped create 37 new International DI Society members, Petersen International reports.

The Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education, Arlington, Va., organized the disability awareness campaign in May, to increase consumer and producer interest in disability insurance.

“Today’s income earner has a 30% chance of becoming disabled, and long-term disabilities last an average of 5 years,” W. Harold Petersen, president of Petersen International and founding president of the International DI Society, says in a statement. “It is our duty to ensure that the American worker is prepared for such an event.”
