West Virginia announced the enrollment of its 100,000th participant in the 529 College Savings plan it began in 2002.

The enrollment was announced by the West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office at a ceremony at the University of Charleston.

Shari Akhtar of BB&T Investment Services Inc., Charleston, W. Va., sold the new account earlier this month.

The West Virginia 529 program, which is run by Hartford Life, part of Hartford Financial Services Group Inc., has $972.8 million in assets under management.
