The California Department of Insurance now has eyes in New York, to help it keep tabs on American International Group Inc.

The department has arranged for a special examiner based in the Big Apple to work with insurance regulators in New York, Delaware, Massachusetts, Texas and other states where AIG, New York, has operations domiciled, according to California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner.

“It’s vital that we have somebody on the ground at AIG’s headquarters in New York to immediately recognize any potential problems, so we can work with our regulatory counterparts to solve these issues,” Poizner says in a statement.
