Guardian Life Insurance Company of America is promoting a rider that can help consumers keep disability insurance in force during tough times.

Owners of individual DI policies can pay for an option that will waive DI premiums for a year if the insureds become unemployed, even if the insureds return to work during that time, according to Guardian, New York.

At Guardian, insureds may be eligible for disability benefits even while premiums are waived due to unemployment, the company says.

The cost of the unemployment premium waiver option rider amounts to about 1% of the total premium cost, Guardian estimates.
