Most Seniors Happy With Medigap, Survey Says

A new survey by 2 health insurance organizations finds 88% of Medigap policyholders are satisfied with their coverage, and 62% of them describe themselves as “very satisfied.”

The survey by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, Chicago, and America’s Health Insurance Plans, Washington, also found 77% say Medigap, which supplements Medicare coverage, provides good value for their money. In addition, 87% say they would recommend the coverage to a friend or relative.

The aspects policyholders like most about their Medigap coverage are that it allows them to pick their doctor, provides peace of mind and makes it easier to deal with medical bills and paperwork.

The study also found 69% of Medigap policyholders are unwilling to pay higher deductibles or other out-of-pocket expenses to reduce their premiums and that 68% would oppose Congressional action that would require them to pay annual deductibles and other expenses for services that are currently covered by their policies, according to BCBSA and AHIP.

500 Medicare enrollees with Medigap plans were interviewed by phone for the study.
