The Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce has given the 2009 Robert R. Masterton Award to Disability RMS.

Disability RMS, Westbrook, Maine, a unit of Assurant Inc., New York, sells disability risk management products and services.

The Masterton Award goes to an individual, business, agency or organization that has helped promote economic development in Portland, Maine.

In other philanthropic news:

Unum Group Corp., Chattanooga, Tenn., has released an annual corporate responsibility report showing that the company and its employees gave more than $6 million and 15,000 hours of volunteer work in 2008.

The company has recycled 3,868 tons of paper and cardboard since 2006, and it recycled 218,000 pounds of computer hardware in 2008.

- The New York Life Foundation, an affiliate of New York Life Insurance Company, New York, is giving $40,000 to the Actuarial Foundation’s Building Your Future initiative.

The grant will support efforts by the Actuarial Foundation, Schaumburg, Ill., to develop a financial literacy curriculum for high school students.

The series includes a book that covers topics such as savings accounts, credit cards and taxes; a second book that covers loans and insurance; and a third book that covers inflation and investment basics.
