Hartford Financial Services Group Inc., is offering an online college savings tool to help consumers and financial advisors develop education financing plans.

Hartford says its new SMART529 Education Planner can help individuals reassess their 529 college savings plans or assist financial advisors in talking to their clients about preparing for college costs.

The company’s online planner offers a database of annual costs, updated biannually, for about 3,800 colleges and universities. It enables a plan to be fit to specific schools or to be based on average costs for 2- and 4-year colleges. Annual costs include estimated tuition, room and board, books and fees.

The Hartford manages the SMART529 college savings plan offered by West Virginia.
