Longfellow Benefits Inc. has donated money to help GOAL build a bridge in a poor, mountainous, hurricane-prone area in Honduras.

The subsistence farmers who live in the Yoro region have been using rope bridges to cross a small river in that location, but the rope bridges have been dangerous, and they wash away when hurricanes hit, according to Longfellow, Boston.

The new, meter-wide bridge is made of steel and concrete and should be stronger, the firm says.

GOAL, Dublin, the organization that built the bridge, was founded in 1977 by an Irish sports journalist.
